History
The history of Welch’s Chocolate Shop started many years ago in Banff, Alberta. In the 1960’s Mom & Dad started a business in Banff as Banff Deli, serving sandwiches and cold meat, drinks and treats. Daddy said to Mom, “I think we need to bring in more candy and chocolates!” Little did they know they had just created a monster - a loving one at that!
They made history with Welch’s candy from all over the world. Top quality chocolates, Dutch licorice as well, keeping the old time nostalgic candy from the past. I’m not sure who has more fun - Dads or moms or the kids. So many times we have heard Parents and grandparents laughing and joking about the candy they haven’t seen in years. By this time we opened a store across the street called Pauline Johnsons. Dad always said people like to have the choice to walk in the sun or shade, no matter which, they all wanted to snack on goodies. Things were going great and another store was opened in the Banff Springs Hotel. |
History of Welch’s Chocolate Shop in Waterton Lake National Park
In 1990, Neil and I were in southern Alberta looking at a ranch that had been advertised for sale. Unfortunately that venture didn’t materialize. The start of Welch’s took off. This is a fabulous beginning of a dream come true. So we could carry on the family tradition of another Candy Store yet still in the mountainous National Park of Waterton Lakes. This amazing little community - it’s as close to heaven as you can get and still be alive. There is a scent in the air that you can’t describe; you need to be there; the fresh mist and warm sun rays are breathtaking.
My Dad and Mom started Welch’s in Banff many years ago. Daddy said, “Peanut, carry on this family legacy, and you will get out of life exactly what you put into it. Make us proud!”
We renovated the existing building and added on. The structure you see today is history in the making for years to come. Our fabulous little store has won many awards - for a walk of memories from the past, candy from your childhood, and still present, as well, we have candy from all over the world. We have so many people come back year after year and reiterate this is the highlight of their trip, being able to stop at the Candy store before going home.
Our store is successful because of the staff and the friendly atmosphere. Our employees are given guidelines to follow and are encouraged to treat everyone with the greatest of respect.
“Treat others as you would like to be treated.” A smile and a kind word goes a long way!
We would like to invite you and your family to come visit Waterton and the Candy Store. The magical warmth of this entire community will bring you back with magnetical force.
-- Be kind to each other.
