Slippery's Coffee & Pie Shop
The candy store was doing great, but so many people came in early morning just before they were sadly getting ready to head for home, asking about coffee and a little bite of something for breakfast. So we started with coffee and juice with a home-made Bear Bite (which is a jumbo cinnamon bun baked in a tray drizzled with caramel, chocolate and a twist of cream cheese generously dusted with toasted almonds - add two forks and everyone's happy!) We became so busy that we needed to have a special place for the morning crowd; this is how the Pie Shop came to be.
In the summer of 2003 the Pie shop grew from breakfast treats to an all day spot for meetings and families to gather for a generous slice of pie and a steaming cup of coffee.
We have up to 20 different pies and jumbo cookies, cheese cake, Bear Bites, as well as our Grizzlie Paws served warm spread with chocolate hazelnut, cream cheese, drizzle caramel, a sprinkling of roasted nuts, served with a dollop of ice cream or a mountain of whip cream, with sliced strawberry.
What a great way to start your day. We have a lot of deer nibbling grass just in front of the pie shop; this is what people come to see - something we have every day to enjoy and admire.
Maybe they go hand in hand, the beauty of the wildlife and relaxing place to enjoy a visit with friends or a loved one sharing a piece of pie and hot coffee (with free refills all day long) - Just like home, but we'll do the work!

In 2014, we had a little bear that loved to be at the store. Her nose never stopped sniffing, but she wasn't sure how to get a taste of that smell.
She would climb the tree in the front yard, just hoping and waiting for someone to drop a sample on the ground. Unfortunately this would not happen; we are very careful to not feed the wildlife.
The end of the season was near and I was short-staffed and had the ovens going later into the evening than normal. The heat in the back kitchen was horrific. I did something that was not allowed - open a window after 6pm; we are very careful about safety for staff and wildlife.
This night was my fault, the window was left open, and our little bear followed her nose, right into the Pie shop - was this heaven or had she just hit the jackpot!? No matter what this was..... [bear thinking to herself: "Fabulous, where do I start!?"]
It was 6:15AM when I went to open the pie shop; as I opened the door, the aroma was present, but being by myself and in a rush, it just didn't click in until it was too late... there she was - 2 feet away from me.
I'm visually impaired, and as the large dark object rose, so did my hand. I could feel her breath and moisture from her nostrils in my hand. All I could hear was my Dad's voice saying, "Don't panic!". Every so slowly I slid my feet back towards the door, which felt like it took forever, I'm living proof that yes your heart can stop and you are still alive!
I truly don't remember taking one breath until I was on the deck and had ever so slowly slid the door shut, so she was not startled. A quick call to the wardens and it seemed like 2 seconds and they were there.
This was a difficult situation because what was my fault, this little bear would pay the price.
I take full responsibility for this disaster; the little bear was transported to a new location and I got a fine and went to court.
We named the little bear Slippery and this is why the Pie Shop is called Slippery's Pie and Coffee.

The mountain ash tree in front of the store is Slippery's.
Always and Forever. We would like to invite one and all to Welch's and Slippery's but most of all to our amazing little town of Waterton where the air is breathtaking and the friendliness is spectacular! Come share a story with us. Laugh and have fun! |
